Hi everyone!
My name is Poorva, and I graduated from Mac.Rob in 2024 with a raw 46 in VCE English Language 3/4.
If you're feeling overwhelmed after getting back an underwhelming SAC result, you're not alone — and more importantly, you're not doomed. Even one or two average SACs won’t necessarily tank your Study Score. There’s still plenty of hope.
If you're reading this at the start of Term 3, you've probably just received your first two SAC scores. You might be thinking:
“My ideas were strong. I revised heaps. Why didn’t I score higher?”
Let me reassure you: you're not the only one asking this. Here's why your score might not reflect your true potential — yet.
When it comes to your Analytical Commentary or Essay, different teachers have different expectations — especially if you’re in a large VCE English Language cohort where your teacher isn’t the one marking your SAC. And what they expect may also differ from what your VCE English Language tutor suggests.
By now, you've likely completed one Analytical Commentary and one Essay. That means you already have a sense of what your teacher didn’t like — whether it’s vague analysis, poor structure, or weak metalanguage. That’s gold. Use it.
Some schools teach slightly different conventions. For instance:
But in the final exam, the marking is standardised and double-checked. So if your SAC scores feel unfairly low, don’t panic — the exam offers a huge opportunity for recovery.
Here are 3 key strategies I recommend as a VCE English Language tutor, especially if you're aiming for that 40+ Study Score.
Don’t copy and paste memorised elaborations from Reddit or tutoring notes.
❌ Generic:
“The nominalisation ‘__’ depersonalises the text and enhances the register.”
✅ Better:
“In this informative newsletter by [author], the nominalisation ‘__’ shifts focus onto the concept of __, reflecting the formal register suited to the field of [insert field from context box].”
👉 Use key details from the context box: text type, audience, field. That shows critical engagement — not just memorisation.
If the essay prompt asks about identity, don’t just describe Australian values — link your metalanguage examples to specific identity types (e.g. national, ethnic, Indigenous, generational).
Keywords in the prompt matter.
One of the most common issues I see in VCE English Language tutoring is students writing great paragraphs that don’t quite answer the question.
SACs are only part of the journey. The end-of-year exam is worth half your score — and can massively lift your average.
Personally, I didn’t get a single H1 all year in SACs. But by putting everything into the final push, I ended up with a raw 46.
So don’t give up now.
Whether you’re struggling with structure, timing, or confidence, just remember:
It’s not too late. You’re not stuck. And with the right support, you can absolutely bounce back.
